Dallas Cowboys ‘Passive’ on Dak Prescott?

FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys are – in the words of ESPN – being “passive” when it comes to Dak Prescott contract negotiations … which we would suggest is putting it lightly.

Appearing on a recent episode of SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the Cowboys have been “pretty passive” in contract talks with their star quarterback, who is up for an extension now and, without one, can be a free agent in the spring of 2025.

From Fowler: “I was told from a source with the team that the notion that the Cowboys don’t want to keep Dak Prescott beyond 2024, when he’ll be a free agent the next year, is false, that they still believe in him firmly. They want him long-term, but I would describe their pursuits at a contract extension so far as pretty passive. He’s got a $61 million cap hit this year, he’s got dead money next year, so he’s got a lot of leverage. So this will play out eventually, but they are committed to spending money, trying to re-sign some of their guys, Dak included.”

That presentation is riddled with errors. … but the “passive” description seems to be letting the Cowboys off the hook.

Why? Our understanding all along has been that the Cowboys – who via free agency have lost a host of starters and rotational guys including Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler, Tyler Biadasz, Tyron Smith, Tony Pollard and Jonathan Hankins – have essentially done nothing at all in terms of pursuing a Prescott deal.

Indeed, Dak recently confirmed that, saying that he’s visited with Jerry Jones … but not really about a contract at all. (See above.)

Prescott threw for 4,516 yards and an NFL-high 36 touchdowns last season and finished second in MVP voting … reason enough for some observers to think Dallas should be much more than “passive” in trying to forge a deal.
